Washington – Following tonight’s Presidential Address, U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) said that improving our nation’s health care system is a critical part of rebuilding our economy.
“Arkansans are concerned about our nation’s economy,” Lincoln said. “I believe one of the most important things we can do to help rebuild our economy and right our long-term fiscal imbalance is to fix our broken health care system.
“Many Arkansans lack confidence in the ability of the federal government to reform our health care system. Most people do not trust their government right now. We need to make some common-sense changes to our health care system that will let us earn their trust.
“I believe that we can make necessary reforms without creating a purely public, new government entitlement program. After spending the past month in Arkansas meeting with thousands of my constituents, I am convinced that we can achieve health insurance reform that is deficit neutral, now and in the future, and curbs health care costs down the road; allows small businesses, the self-employed, and other individuals to shop for affordable, quality options just like federal employees; cuts the annual estimated $700 billion in inefficiencies, waste, fraud, and abuse; and changes the way insurance companies do business by requiring coverage of pre-existing conditions and allowing individuals to have coverage even if you lose your job. I also believe that we can make these necessary reforms without harming those who have health insurance. My goal has always been to keep what works and make it better. Creating security and stability for those with insurance must be a priority.
“Skyrocketing health care costs are hurting our economy, our families, and our businesses, and the time has come for responsible action.”
