Little Rock, AR-Secretary of State Charlie Daniels announced today the opening of a new State Capitol exhibit, Arkansans in the Korean War. The exhibit pays tribute to those Arkansans who served our country in what has been termed “America’s forgotten war.” Thirty-two images that capture the experience of these Arkansas soldiers are currently displayed in the Capitol’s lower-level foyer gallery.
The photographs were collected by the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies of the Central Arkansas Library System as part of its “Forgotten: the Arkansas Korean War Project” initiative. The exhibit at the Capitol spotlights some of the images supplied to the project by over 6,300 Arkansas Korean War veterans or their families. The images may have been official or press photos collected by veterans, while others are unmistakably personal snapshots captured by Arkansas servicemen while they performed a hard job a long way from home.
Fought from 1950 to 1953, the Korean War ultimately cost the lives of over 36,000 American servicemen including 461 Arkansans. Arkansans in the Korean War will remain on display through November in the Capitol’s lower-level foyer gallery.
A permanent exhibit, Call of Duty: Arkansans at War highlights Arkansas’s war veterans from several wars, including the Korean conflict. It is located in the northeast corner of the fourth floor of the Arkansas State Capitol.
Both exhibits and may be viewed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
