Sign Up Now for August and Early September Craft Classes at Arknasas Craft School

July 17, 2013 by Cotton Rohrscheib

Now that the kids are back in school, perhaps you have the time to indulge in a class at the Arkansas Craft School, in Mountain View, Arkansas.

There are still openings in the following classes scheduled for August:  “Rigid Heddle Weaving” with Felicitas Sloves (August 5 – 9), “Beginning Bowl Turning” with Gene Sparling (August 16 – 18), “Mohair Saddle Cinches” with Pop Wagner (August 23 – 25), and “Carving Spirit Faces” with Denny Maynard (August 23 – 25).  In addition, the following new classes will be offered in September.

Are you curious about the way that books are actually constructed?  Would you like to be able to bind your own hand-crafted journals?  In this 3-day workshop, “Handmade Books,” taught by Lesha Shaver of Little Mountain Bindery in Fayetteville, students will make 2 – 3 hand-sewn and constructed books complete with decorative paste papers.  Tuition is $175.00 for the September 6 – 8 class, with an additional $55.00 materials fee.

Wet-felting is the ancient process of turning wool fleece into a piece of wool felt material by using warm water, pressure and agitation. In the class, “Wet Felting – an Exploration,” fiber artist Barbara Cade will lead students in this ancient process, working with them to complete purses, pillows, table mats, holiday items, or art work for the wall.  Tuition for this September 10 – 12 class is $175.00, with a $40.00 materials fee for the first fleece.

On September 13 – 15, Kip Powers will be teaching students how to turn hollow 2-piece wooden boxes on the lathe, in the class “Boxes and Two-Piece Approach to Hollow Vessels.”  This technique is ultimately easier than turning boxes ‘blind’ from a single piece of wood. The three-day class is $175.00 for tuition, with a $10.00 – $25.00 materials fee for sanding and finishing supplies.  Students may also obtain wood at cost from the instructor, or bring their own.

Community craft classes will be starting again in mid-October.  Dates and class offerings will be announced soon!

Visit the Arkansas Craft  School’s website, www.arkansascraftschool.org for more information on these and other upcoming classes, as well as registration forms and scholarship applications.  The Arkansas Craft School, located in Mountain View, Arkansas is dedicated to the education of aspiring and practicing craft artisans for success in the Creative Economy.  The Craft School partners with Ozarka College which offers Continuing Education credits for all of its courses.  Support for the Arkansas Craft School is provided, in part, by the Arkansas Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, and the National Endowment of the Arts.
