April 29, 2013 by Cotton Rohrscheib

Sign up now for classes during Sustainability Weekend May 31 – June 2, 2013.

Students may sign up now for classes during Sustainability Weekend, sponsored by the Arkansas Craft School and Meadowcreek LINKPROJECT May 31 – June 2, 2013, at Tomahawk Creek Farm in rural Stone County, 10 miles southeast of Mountain View.

Workshops include:

·       Building an Earth Oven, where students acquire hands-on experience in the building of an outdoor oven suitable for home-made bread or wood-fired pizza, taught by Pete Klinkhammer.  This is a three-day class with tuition of $175.00.  Students will leave a completed earth oven on site, going home with the experience and skills to build their own oven at home.

·       From Potpourri to Procion, a class in dyeing cloth and yarn taught by Dana Shaeffer, will cover both natural and fiber-reactive dyes.  Tuition for this three-day class is $175.00, and students can expect to come away with several pieces of colorful hand-dyed fabric and skeins of yarn.

·       Ultimate Organic Skincare, taught by Amy Hazel will have students cooking up their own natural lipbalms, creams, and other skincare essentials.  This is a one-day class, presented on Friday, May 31.  The cost is $75.00, with a $25.00 materials fee.

·       AADP Certified Health Coach, Carrie Marry, will be teaching Fermented Foods, which will focus on the art of making kimchee.  Tuition for the class is $75.00 and will be presented on Saturday, June 1.  There is a $10.00 materials fee, and students can expect to come away with at least one quart of delicious and nutritious fermented vegetables.

·       Maureen Brennan Skinner will show students the procedure for Straw Bale Gardening, a method for instant gardening that features no tilling, no bending, no weeding – just watching plants grow!  This will be a ½ day workshop, Saturday morning from 10 am – 12 noon, with a tuition cost of $30.00.

·       Missy Brown will teach a short course on Mini-ponics 101, a class in building a miniature hydroponic system.  Students will learn how to grow bigger plants in less space with 1/10 of the water needed for conventional soil gardening.  This will be a ½ day workshop, presented Friday afternoon from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm.  Tuition is $30.00.

Visit the Arkansas Craft School’s website, www.arkansascraftschool.org  for more information on craft or foodways classes, meals, and the concert during the weekend, as well as registration forms and scholarship applications.  Find out more about the sustainable agriculture classes by visiting Meadowcreek LINKPROJECT’s website, www.meadowcreeklink.com.  Students may also sign up for classes, or purchase meals or concert tickets by calling Terri Van Orman at (870) 269-8397.  The Arkansas Craft School, located in Mountain View, Arkansas is dedicated to the education of aspiring and practicing craft artisans for success in the Creative Economy.  The Craft School partners with Ozarka College which offers Continuing Education credits for all of its courses.  Support for the Arkansas Craft School is provided, in part, by the Arkansas Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, and the National Endowment of the Arts.
